From the hem to the pockets to the darts in a blouse, seams create structure and shape for all clothing and other sewn items. There are a variety of different seams, and when deciding which seam to use, make sure to consider the type of fabric and function of the garment. For higher-end garments, consistent stitches and high-quality seam finishes are important, while for a more casual.

This seam which is similar to the lapped seam, is used for its functional as well as decorative properties. How to sew a slot seam. Keep a 1 1/2″ wide cloth, as long as the seam, under the seams. This is used as a backing piece kept between the two fabric lapped along the stitching line.

Strength: The seam efficiency of the sewn seam should be so that sewn seam strength is balanced and can withstand the everyday usage of the garment. Elasticity: Elasticity of sewn seam should be slightly greater than that of the material which it will enable the material to support its shape of the forces encountered for the intended end use of the sewn item.

Unlike most stitched seams, if a bonded or welded seam is joined incorrectly, it is generally not possible to undo and re-weld or bond (Tyler, ).Therefore a whole garment may be wasted, unlike most traditionally stitched items which can be reworked either by unpicking and restitching a seam or, if necessary, through panel replacement (Thorp Cited by:   A tent with leaky seams is no fun, especially amid that afternoon downpour.

But a tent’s seams are also its most vulnerable zone to rogue and insistent water. To prevent infiltration, tent manufacturers have three options: seam taping, seam sealing, and creating a strong seam.

Superimposed seam; Lapped seam; French seam; Flat and Felled seam; Bound seam; Seam class 1: Superimposed seam This is the most common construction of seam on garments.

The simplest seam type within the class is formed by superimposing the edge of one piece of material on another. French seams were mainly used only on sheer fabrics and undergarments.

(The seam is constructed in two steps to fully enclose the raw edges.) I can’t recall seeing a true French seam on antique garments that are flatlined or cut from anything heavier than a sheer. Seams are basic requirements in the manufacturing of garments. In general, seam performance has a great influence on the garment quality.

Seam and stitch types affect the quality and appearance of garments. Seams of the garment must be durable and smooth. Stitch and seam types and stitch and seam parameters should be selected according to the garment and fabric type.
